Privacy Policy

IOM seeks to ensure that personal information processed through the Website is handled with the utmost care and confidentiality. Data privacy is a human right and is essential to human dignity.

This Privacy Policy explains in which manner IOM collects, stores, uses, shares or otherwise processes information about the User on the Website. By accessing and using this Website, the User agrees to the terms in this Privacy Policy (hereinafter referred to as the “Privacy Policy”) contained herein.

Data Collected by IOM

When the User accesses the Website, the visitor information and the essential and nonessential technical information listed below are automatically collected. No other information is collected through the Website unless such information is voluntarily disclosed. The information the User might choose to disclose is listed below as "optional information." In such event, IOM will store such personal information safely and securely and will only use the personal information for the purpose for which it was disclosed, namely to contact IOM via email, or to register in the Website.

IOM does not sell, distribute or rent personal information collected on the Website. Any voluntarily provided personal information collected, received, used, transferred, or stored by IOM will be protected by strict conditions of confidentiality and security at all stages of data collection and processing. IOM will not use the personal information for other purpose than outlined in this Privacy Policy, without a clear notice on the Website and without also providing the User an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prohibit such unrelated uses.

However, IOM relies on online service providers for the provision of certain services, such as Google Analytics.

The User’s information is used to route the requested web page to the User’s computer for viewing. In theory, the requested web page and the routing information could be discerned by other entities involved in transmitting the requested page to the User. IOM does not control the privacy practices of those entities. Essential and nonessential information enables IOM to provide services or information tailored more specifically to the User’s needs or to forward messages or inquiries to another entity that is better able to do so, and also allows IOM to plan website improvements. IOM uses information the User has provided only to complete a specific request. IOM will not share this information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to complete that request.

Automatically Collected Information

  • Essential technical information: identification of the page or service the User requests, type of browser and operating system and the date and time of access.
  • Nonessential technical information: Internet address of the website from which the User linked directly to the Website, and the "cookies information" described below.

Optional Information

  • When the User sends IOM an e-mail: name, e-mail address, and the content of e-mail.

Cookies

To improve browsing experience, IOM uses cookies that collect information on the User’s browsing behaviour on the Website. By using the Website, the User agrees that cookies be placed on the User’s computer or other devices used when visiting the Website. The User can disable cookies by changing the browser settings but doing so may affect the functionality of certain areas of the Website.

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small data files placed on the User’s computer or other devices when the User visits the Website. The data that cookies collect are different than any personal information that the User chooses to disclose to IOM for a specific purpose. They identify the User’s browsing device to IOM’s servers via the IP address and provide a variety of information, such as the area(s) of the Website visited and for how long. If the User returns to the Website, IOM can determine whether the User previously visited a given page based on the cookie from prior visits. The use of cookies is very common because cookies help website administrators meet the needs of the User(s).

Managing Cookies: Enabling and Disabling Cookies

The User is free to decide at any time to be notified before installation of cookies, not to allow the installation of cookies on the User’s computer or other devices when visiting the Website by changing the browser settings to enable or disable the use of cookies. However, if cookies are disabled, the User may not be able to use certain features and may be required to re-enter information more frequently to use certain services on the Website.

How does IOM Use Cookies?

  1. To ensure the Website is working efficiently.
  2. To improve the User experience on the Website.
  3. To ensure that the Website meets the User’s needs for future visits.
  4. To measure the impact of the Website’s performance and content.
  5. To learn the location from which the User accesses the Website.

IOM uses a specialist service provider to collect information on the User’s preferences from the User’s visits to its websites and to analyse preferences from cookies already stored in User’s browser.

To obtain this information, IOM enables Google Analytics to analyse the traffic on its websites through a series of cookies that are already stored in the User’s browser and that compile data from User browsing preferences. The User can see the types of cookies used by Google and learn more about the different categories in the Google Privacy & Terms.

IOM may change its specialist service provider at any time without notice to the User and will update this Privacy Policy as necessary at that time.

Third-Party Cookies

The Website may contain embedded third-party content or plugins, such as links to Facebook, videos on YouTube, photos on Instagram, Twitter, and other resources. Third parties delivering this content will often install cookies on the User’s browsing device, and IOM uses these cookies for the same purposes as it uses its own cookies.

IOM does not govern the installation and other settings related to the third-party cookies. Therefore, it is recommended to visit the third-party websites directly to learn more about their privacy policies and use of cookies.

IOM cannot be held responsible for protecting the privacy of data collected by third-party cookies even if they link to IOM’s website through embedded content or plugins. Most modern web browsers permit users to disable cookies from third parties while enabling cookies on the host site.

Notification of Changes

IOM will post any changes to the Privacy Policy directly to this page, so the User is always aware of what information IOM collects and how it is processed. The User is responsible to keep abreast of the latest updates in the Privacy Policy while using the Website.
